I find it strange that as a nation we say that we want to defend freedom across the world and help spread democracy. I'm not talking about military objectives, I'm talking about the simple process of having a clean and fair election in countries that we wish to help. The biggest thing that I point to is Afghanistan. Think about it, we are fighting a war in Afghanistan saying that we're doing it to help rid the country of the Taliban and it's oppressive rule. Well if that's the case I find it very strange that the United States has publicly backed the re-elected (not exactly in the cleanest manner) Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Now, it is true that the U.S. did support the decision by the UN to have a committee that checked for fraud in the Afghanistan Presidential Elections, and no surprise there, it found a ton of problems. However, since the political opposition of Karzai's dropped out of the race none of that really matters now, especially since Karzai has already been sworn back in as the President of Afghanistan. Anyway, I'm sure you're wondering what I'm getting at with all this. I just find it strange that we fight a war against the Taliban who abuse and assault women but yet we support a man, Karzai, who has signed into law a bill that allows husbands to beat and starve their wives if they do not give into sex at least twice a week. I know this post is not very well written but I refused to write about the Obama bow in Japan because I feel that it means absolutely nothing. Anyway, if you have your own ideas on this discussion please let me know your thoughts.
