Don't be quick to judge Ft. Hood
It's a sad day when our brave soldiers who are going off to fight for their country, whether you agree with the war or not, are gunned down by their own brothers-in-arms; on their own home soil. Of course I'm referring to the terrible tragedy that occurred at Ft. Hood on Thursday. 12 soldiers have been killed and 31 wounded according to the MSNBC report on the incident. According to military officials the shooter was Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan who was an Army psychiatrist who was being shipped of to Iraq. Now, I know that there are several of my right wing friends and maybe others who the first thing they will think of is Hasan's name and immediately tie him to an Islamic terrorist group or say that he was some nut job committing Allah's will. This should not be assumed. Hasan was a United States soldier who cracked under the pressure. Religion very well may have nothing to do with this. In fact, the last shooting that occurred at Ft. Hood was by Spc. Jody Wirawan. Wirawan killed his First Lieutenant and then shot himself to death. Also, the Council for American-Islamic Relations has condemned the act stating that no religion would promote such an act. I say to those who are angry and looking for a fight: don't be. What we should do now is pray (in whatever way you see fit) for the families of the soldiers and civilians who were caught up in this shooting. A man was faced with going to war, there is no reason to make this more than he simply cracked under the pressure. To tell the truth, I'm not sure if I would be able to handle that kind of pressure. Only time will tell the true story of what happened at Ft. Hood; until then, don't be quick to judge.

After reading your blog...I have to say time won't tell anything. Nobody knows what Hasan was thinking when he started shooting and nobody ever will. We can listen to the "theories" all we want of MSNBC or CNN or whatever newsfeed channel you may watch. I spend my break times at work listening to this stuff all the time....90% of the news is sad. I want to start a news channel that only have happy reports about kids who don't miss a day of school for four years and kittens that got rescued by the local firefighter and pie eating contests at a local fair. The "reality" news is the reason I don't what news channels at home, I have better things to do than wonder why a soldier at Ft. Hood in Texas shoot a bunch of other soldiers. It's sad, but we'll be over it and forget it and some other "heart breaking gut wrenching" story will come along.
ReplyDeleteIt's kinda sad but I have to agree with you. That's the way our society works, we've gotten desensitized to violence in the news. So, we'll think about Ft. Hood for about ten minutes and then move on to some other tragedy. We do need more happy stuff in the news, even though I think that would be hard, if only to make the violent sad things stick in our heads a bit more.
